The Tools and Materials Actually Worth Owning

What to buy first, what to buy later, and what to leave on the shelf

Walk into a model shop with money to spend and you will come out with an airbrush, a resistance soldering unit and a bag of scenic materials you have no idea how to use. Meanwhile the thing that would actually have improved your layout most costs about fifteen quid and lives in the electrical aisle. Here is the honest order in which tools earn their keep.

The First Five Purchases

A multimeter. A cheap digital one is fine. It answers, in about four seconds, the question that otherwise ruins entire evenings: is there power at this piece of track? Continuity testing tells you which fishplate has gone open circuit, which dropper never got soldered properly, and whether that point is actually switching polarity. Nothing else on this list saves as much time.

A soldering iron. Something in the 25 to 40 watt range with a decent chisel tip and a stand. Add flux-cored electrical solder and a small tin of separate flux. You do not need anything exotic to solder droppers to rail, and the technique takes about half an hour to learn on a scrap piece.

Rail cutters. Flush-cutting rail nippers designed for track give a clean square cut in seconds. Side cutters meant for wire will crush the rail head and leave a mess you then have to file straight.

A scalpel or craft knife. With a proper handle and a box of spare blades. Blunt blades cause more injuries than sharp ones because you push harder. Change them often.

Wire strippers. Not your teeth, not the scalpel. Adjustable strippers that do not nick the conductor pay for themselves on the first dropper you do not have to redo.

For Track and Wiring

The single best habit: label every wire as you fit it. A strip of masking tape and a biro. Six months later, under a baseboard, on your back, with a torch in your teeth, you will not remember which of the eleven identical black wires goes to the yard.

For Testing and Maintaining Stock

A rolling road. A set of rollers that lets a locomotive run on the spot at full speed while you watch, listen and clean the wheels. Invaluable for running in a new model, diagnosing a limp, and cleaning pickups without hanging the loco upside down.

Isopropyl alcohol and cotton buds. For wheels, pickups and railheads. It evaporates cleanly and does not leave a residue that attracts dust.

A track rubber, used sparingly. It is an abrasive: brilliant for shifting stubborn oxidation, but it scratches the railhead and scratched rail gets dirty faster. Alcohol for routine cleaning, rubber for emergencies, and never either of them on painted bodywork.

A loco cradle. A foam-lined trough that holds a model upside down without leaning on the detail. Cheap, and it stops you snapping a handrail off a hundred pound locomotive.

Light oil and a fine applicator. Model-specific oil, one drop per bearing, not household three-in-one and not much of it. Over-oiling picks up dust and gums up gears.

For Scenery

Scenery is where the money disappears if you are not careful, and where household items do most of the work.

For the Baseboard

A cordless drill driver, a decent saw or a jigsaw, PVA wood glue, a few clamps, a steel rule and a set square. If you are building boards to be portable, add a bradawl and a set of alignment dowels.

Whatever you use to cut ply, do it outside or with dust extraction. Ply dust is unpleasant and MDF dust is worse.

Light and Magnification

An adjustable bench lamp, ideally a daylight one, will improve your modelling more than most tools. Add a headband magnifier or a pair of cheap reading glasses a couple of strengths up from what you normally use. Fitting a coupling to an N gauge wagon under a 60 watt ceiling bulb is a fight that nobody needs to have.

Storage, Which Nobody Buys Until It Is Too Late

Small parts drawers for couplings, pickups, screws and the tiny bits that fall off models. Stock boxes with foam trays for locomotives and coaches, because the manufacturer's packaging is bulky and you will eventually stop putting things back in it. A labelled box for spares harvested from broken models, which is where half your future repairs come from.

What to Leave Until Later

An airbrush. Wonderful for weathering and repainting, and a significant investment once you add a compressor, a spray booth and the paints. Weathering powders and a brush get you eighty per cent of the way for a fraction of the cost, and you will know within a year whether you want the rest.

A resistance soldering unit. Superb for etched brass kits. Entirely unnecessary for wiring a layout.

An expensive DCC system. Buy the smallest system that runs your locomotives now. The market moves, your needs will change, and an entry-level command station will tell you within six months whether you are the sort of modeller who wants sound and automation or the sort who just wants trains to go round.

A lathe or a mill. If you need one, you already know.

A Sensible Order

Multimeter, then soldering iron and rail cutters, then a scalpel and files, then a rolling road once you have more than a couple of locomotives, then scenic materials, then anything with a compressor attached to it. Buy the cheap version of anything you are not sure you will use, and the good version of anything you have already worn out once. That rule has never once let anybody down.
